Advancing Global Standards in Dive Education

The Professional Institute of Dive Educators is proud to announce its official affiliation with the Confédération Mondiale des Activités Subaquatiques (CMAS) — the World Underwater Federation.

This partnership establishes The Professional Institute of Dive Educators as the U.S. federation affiliate of CMAS, dedicated to upholding the highest standards in diver training, professional credentialing, and underwater science. Together, we are building a pathway for divers and instructors to achieve internationally recognized CMAS certifications backed by a legacy of safety, research, and excellence.

CMAS: The World Underwater Federation

Founded in 1959 by Jacques-Yves Cousteau, CMAS (Confédération Mondiale des Activités Subaquatiques) is the world’s first international scuba federation. Unlike commercial agencies, it is a non-profit recognized by the IOC and UNESCO.

Key Comparisons

  • Structure: Uses a Star System (1* to 4*) rather than named levels like PADI/SSI.
  • Training Style: Focuses on academic depth and technical discipline; often viewed as more rigorous than “resort-style” certifications.
  • Standards: Fully ISO-compliant and globally equivalent to all major US-based agencies.
  • Presence: The dominant authority for scientific, military, and club-based diving worldwide.
